In a world all going wrong, what interventions can we make against the darkness? How can we be both highly present in the moment and radically subjective about being alive? Girls Girls Girls are a rock band from Europe who seek to answer these questions. They are both flamboyant and introspective, heart-on-sleeve honest yet darkly ironic. They are also a superb live act: intense but performative, a brooding and intelligent party band.
Their catalogue is filled with almost dictionary definitions of the term ‘ cult classic’. Their 2010 release, ‘Hello Sailor..!’ saw them channelling an escapist nautical sensibility, playing romantic sailor punk obsessed with the German city of Hamburg. 2012’s ‘Here Come the Bastards’ followed, combining sex club darkroom confessionals, shoegaze existentialism and pop enthusiasm. Their most recent album, 2016’s ‘help’, captured a band’s rocking journey through a dark night of the soul, emerging at its conclusion with renewed faith in the power of music, and our ability to shape the world as we wish to see it.
With performances imbued with a sense of occasion and drawing on a musical influences as diverse as Bowie (RIP), Talking Heads, Rammstein and Chic, the band play live not to document the shit we are currently in, but to point to what is possible. Through solidarity, intensity and an embrace of contradiction, Girls Girls Girls take to the road in 2017 to show that there is another way.
Fox Eyes had to cancel. Chief Mountain will be filling in.
